Welcome to the Papworth Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC)
The Papworth Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC) is a major centre for the provision of ventilatory support and sleep medicine with a national referral base.
The RSSC consultants are Dr Ian Smith, Dr Tim Quinnell, Dr Mike Davies and Dr Nick Oscroft.
There are 29 beds on the main ward and a further 6 in the sleep laboratory, where there is also a research area. The Trust has recently completed a 4 million extension which houses a purpose built outpatient department and an administrative area.
The RSSC is one of the few fully accredited specialist sleep centres in the UK dealing with all non-respiratory and respiratory sleep disorders. We perform more than one hundred clinical polysomnographies per month and are actively involved in sleep research. We run outreach clinics throughout East Anglia to enable us to deliver sleep services locally to our patients.
From a respiratory perspective the RSSC provides domiciliary non-invasive ventilation for all conditions requiring this therapy including neuromuscular disorders, thoracic wall deformity, COPD and obesity. We run an invasive ventilation weaning programme (IVWP) accepting transfers from ITUs on a national basis. We run outpatient respiratory clinics and see patients as day cases as required to optimise their care. We manage patients requiring on going invasive mechanical ventilation in the community and have an active research programme examining all aspects of respiratory care we provide.
In April 2012 Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was commissioned by the National Specialised Commissioning Team to provide the National Ataxia Telangiectasia (AT) service for adult patients.
Information about the management of other sleep disorders can be found in the Sleep Services area of the website, while information about the other Respiratory Support services we provide can be found in the Respiratory Support area.
